James and Edgar Hazlett Charitable Trust
James Hazlett set up as a merchant in Clyde in 1861 and became one of Central Otago's ''founding fathers'', going on to serve in public office as a mayor of Clyde, a justice of the peace, an inaugural councillor of the Otago Provincial Council for the Clyde district and on various boards, including as a director of The Perpetual Trustees Estate and Agency Company of NZ (now known as Perpetual Guardian).
Edgar Christophers Hazlett was the son of James Hazlett. Edgar was a former Managing Director and Chairman of the Otago Daily Times in its early days. Edgar Hazlett died on 3 November 1967 and under his Will a charitable trust to be known as the ‘James and Edgar Hazlett Trust’ was set up to benefit the charitable work of the Dunstan Hospital and of the Branch of the Returned Servicemen’s Association in the Clyde area. There is also a further provision for grants to made available to any organisation in the Township of Clyde and in the surrounding area commonly known as the Dunstan District.
To apply income at the Trustees sole discretion towards such charitable purposes as the Trustee thinks fit, particularly for the areas of Dunstan, Clyde and Alexandra.
Funding Amount and Time Frames
- Applications to be considered as a recipient for funding are assessed annually. The next granting cycle will be from Monday 6th May 2019 to Friday 24th May 2019.
- The amount to be distributed this year is approximately $35,000. As a guide, grants of up to $5,000 will be considered.
- All applications must be completed online.
- The length of the assessment process is dependent on the volume of applications and all applicants are notified of the decision. During the assessment period, trustees may request further clarification from the applicant regarding their application.
Regrettably, due to the number of applications received, we are unable to provide detailed feedback on unsuccessful applications. Please note the decision of the Trustee is final and not subject to any appeals process.
